Solid materials such as tungsten, titanium, stainless steel are much stronger than gold and will hold up better over time. They can stand up to wear and tear for an adventurous and active lifestyle.

Platinum is a stronger metal than gold and white gold, but it scratches easily. Most people who wear platinum don’t mind how the look of platinum changes as it is worn, and scratches can be polished out.

Best diamond shape for durability

Most durable gemstone settings

The two most durable gemstone settings to consider are prong and bezel.

Prong setting

Prongs are claws made of the ring’s metal that curl over the sides of the gemstone to hold it in place. A 6-prong setting is more reliable than 4-prong, since if one of six claws weakens or breaks, the stone won’t immediately fall out, whereas if one of four prongs breaks, the chance of losing the diamond is quite high.

A prong setting has the stone raised up, allowing light to pass through the diamond at every angle. Prong settings are excellent for supporting larger stones, such as a sparkling 2-karat or larger stone, in an engagement ring.

Bezel setting

With a bezel setting, the diamond is held in place by metal all the way around the gemstone’s rim, keeping it snug and firm against the band. The diamond is set lower on a bezel-set band than a prong-held stone, so it is extremely secure.

Having a bezel-set diamond does not diminish the sparkliness of the stone – diamonds sparkle from light through the top of the stone.
