Spring Cleaning: How to Maintain Your Jewelry

Spring is in the air, and now is an ideal time to deep clean your diamond rings and jewelry to ensure that your pieces remain spotless and sparkling. Our tips for cleaning, maintenance, and storage will help you preserve and protect your diamonds, gemstones, and jewelry.

Professional Cleaning
Your wedding ring is with you most of the time, and therefore exposed to elements such as garden dirt, hand soap, lotion, and harsh cleaning chemicals. We recommend a professional cleaning of your wedding ring every six months, and a professional cleaning for other pieces every 12 months.

A regular professional cleaning schedule can help extend the life of your jewelry. When you bring your pieces to us, we offer free same-day, on-site cleaning and inspection while you wait. In addition to cleaning, we’ll also thoroughly inspect your jewelry for loose stones, worn prongs, and other signs of needed repair. Our services will restore the brilliance of your jewelry and ensure that it remains in top condition.

At-Home Care
While you can’t replicate the same cleaning process at home as we do in the store, at-home care can keep your jewelry shining in between professional cleanings. To clean your gemstone jewelry at home, fill a bowl with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish soap (avoid cleaning your jewelry over the sink or near an open drain). Use a soft bristle toothbrush to gently scrub behind the stone where dust and dirt collect, then rinse your jewelry and pat dry with a soft cloth.

Solid gold does not rust, but frequent wear can cause gold to lose some of its luster. To maintain the shine of your gold jewelry, clean it periodically with a mixture of warm water and mild dish soap, then polish with a soft cloth. If your platinum piece looks dull or dirty, soak it briefly in a gentle jewelry cleanser before polishing it with a soft cloth. Silver jewelry requires extra care to prevent scratches or tarnishing. To remove dirt and smudges from silver, use a soft cloth to dry-polish the surface, and protect your silver from harsh soaps or chemical-based cleansers.

Jewelry Storage
To protect your gemstone jewelry, wrap each piece individually and store separately to avoid scratches or a tangle of jewelry. Organic gemstones like amber or pearls are porous and require special care. Store these gems in a cloth-lined box or pouch to protect them from chemicals found in perfume or hair products, and separate from other jewelry to avoid scratches. Store silver pieces in their own soft cloth bag or non-tarnish jewelry box, placed in a cool and dry area.
