Can’t Find the Perfect Piece of Jewelry? Here’s What the Custom Design Process Entails

Have you been searching for the perfect piece of jewelry for an engagement, anniversary, wedding, or other special life event, and simply can’t find it? Do you have your grandmother’s diamond that you’d like to reset? Or perhaps you have a gemstone you’d like to put into a special setting and you’re overwhelmed thinking about possibilities.

Creating a custom piece of jewelry may be the answer and Gary J. Long Jewelers can help you through the entire process from an idea to a beautiful fabrication in 4-6 weeks.

Your first step to a custom-designed piece of jewelry

Let’s have a conversation! When you think you want a custom piece of jewelry, the best first step is to visit a jeweler and share your thoughts. Gary J. Long Jewelers offers consultations to answer your questions that lead to creating the perfect piece that reflects the recipient’s lifestyle and expresses your love for them.

We love when a client shows us pictures of what they like. Pinterest has a plethora of images for all types of jewelry pieces, so showing us what you have ‘pinned’, sharing magazine clippings you’ve collected, or letting us see what you have saved from other social media sites can be a great start.

If you don’t have a picture, don’t worry, we can still help! Clients may simply know they want a custom ring or a unique design for a custom pendant. We’re happy to have a conversation about the recipient’s personality and lifestyle, as well as our client’s motivations behind wanting the custom piece of jewelry so we can ask the right questions in the design phase.

Choosing the stone(s) and metal for your custom piece of jewelry

If you have a gemstone, or collection of diamonds, that you’ve inherited, we're happy to help you with creative designs to use one or all of them in single or multiple pieces.

If you have your grandmother’s engagement ring, you may simply want to reset the diamonds in a similar but updated setting. Or maybe you’d rather have a pendant than a ring. We can help with that transformation.

We’re also proud to have an extensive selection of diamonds and other gemstones you can choose from for the one-of-a-kind design you have in mind.

You can also use a combination of a diamond you have, for instance, with a colored gemstone from our collection.

In our conversation with you, we’ll help you narrow in on the various types of settings for the stone(s) you have, or that you’ve selected.

We’ll also help you in determining the best type of precious metal for the piece you have in mind, as there are several to consider: 14kt/18kt yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum.

The custom design process

Once the image of your piece starts to take hold in your mind, Gary and his award-winning team will draft a basic concept for you. He’ll sketch it from different angles to help you envision it and determine if we’re on the right path.

You don’t have to decide in one day. The creative process can take time, so we encourage clients to think about the design and update us with their thoughts and any new ideas they have over a few days.

When you give us the go-ahead, we’ll take the description of your custom piece and prepare a computer-aided design (CAD) image for your review and approval in a few short days.

We’ll review the image together, make any modifications and now your dream piece is ready to become a reality.

And then comes the toughest part of the process – waiting while the custom piece is made – about 2-6 weeks.

When your dream becomes a reality

It’s always our pleasure to present the custom-designed, one-of-a-kind, piece of jewelry to our clients. Being able to hold the newly manufactured design in their hands, which only weeks ago had barely been imagined, is one of our greatest joys.

We would be honored to help you create a just-the-right custom piece for yourself or a loved one.
